How vehicle freight from China is calculated
Three shipping methods dominate vehicle export from China, and choosing the right one usually matters more than negotiating the rate itself.
- Container (FCL) — safest and best for high-value cars. A 40' HQ fits 2–4 vehicles depending on size; loading racks add roughly one extra unit.
- RoRo — cheapest per unit for sedans, SUVs and bulk volume. Vehicles must be drivable, and no spare parts may be loaded inside.
- Land transport — exclusive to Central Asia and Russia via Khorgos and Alashankou. Delivery in 7–16 days instead of 4–6 weeks by sea.
Ocean rates to the Middle East remain elevated in 2026 due to the Strait of Hormuz situation — emergency conflict surcharges alone can account for around 40% of a container rate. Always confirm whether a quote includes them.
